Sniff 'n' the Tears Biography

Sniff ’n’ the Tears formed in 1978 and after releasing their first album Fickle Heart, had a worldwide hit with Driver’s Seat, which reached 15 on the billboard chart in the USA in 1979. The band toured extensively following the success of Driver’s Seat, and performed and recorded four albums together until 1982, with Roberts later releasing two solo albums.

Then in the early nineties, Driver’s Seat reached number one in The Netherlands after being used in a car ad campaign which introduced the song to a new generation and led to the band reforming for a European tour and to make another album. Radio play and ad campaigns, most recently Amazon Prime, Hollywood films such as Boogie Nights and Anchor Man 2, as well as the TV series The Walking Dead, have kept Driver’s Seat in the public eye, and it has become a perennial favourite loved by successive generations. Since their last European tour in 1992, the band have continued to record and have released four albums.

Performing as a duo, singer-songwriter Paul Roberts and guitarist Les Davidson launched the acoustic project with a fantastically received sell-out show in London in October 2018, followed by several further performances in the UK and the Netherlands. These were stripped back and intimate performances, opening up a new way to present the songs and connect to an audience.

The latest Sniff ’n’ the Tears Acoustic album Jump, released January 2020, is about that discovery. The album includes previously unrecorded songs as well as songs from previous Sniff ’n’ the Tears albums, ranging from 1978’s Fickle Heart to 2017’s Random Elements.
