Dhafer Youssef ist ein visionärer Oud-Meister, Sänger und Komponist, dessen Musik Grenzen überschreitet und Genres vereint. Aufgewachsen in einer Familie von Muezzinen, entdeckte er sein stimmliches Potenzial durch den Koran-Gesang und frühe Klangexperimente in seinem Dorf. Früh lernte er die Oud kennen und wurde von zeitgenössischen Grooves geprägt; seine musikalische Ausbildung setzte er in Tunis und Wien fort, wo Jazz, indische Musik und multikulturelle Einflüsse seinen unverwechselbaren Stil prägten.

Seit seinem Debütalbum Malak (1999) verbindet er mediterrane Traditionen mit Jazz, Elektronik und globalen Klängen und schuf hochgelobte Werke wie Electric Sufi, Digital Prophecy, Divine Shadows, Abu Nawas Rhapsody und Birds Requiem. Als gefeierter Kollaborateur trat er unter anderem mit Nguyên Lê, Paolo Fresu, Zakir Hussain und Dave Holland auf und komponierte Filmmusik für Black Gold und The Amazing Spider-Man.

Für seinen innovativen Umgang mit Oud und Stimme wird Youssef als führende Persönlichkeit der zeitgenössischen Musik gefeiert, der östliche und westliche Traditionen nahtlos verbindet und die Möglichkeiten seines Instruments neu definiert.

Dhafer Youssef is a visionary oud master, singer, and composer whose music transcends borders and brings genres together. Raised in a family of muezzins, he discovered the potential of his voice through Quranic chant and early sound experiments in his village. He was introduced to the oud at an early age and was shaped by contemporary grooves; he continued his musical education in Tunis and Vienna, where jazz, Indian music, and multicultural influences helped form his unmistakable style.
Since his debut album Malak (1999), Dhafer Youssef has combined Mediterranean traditions with jazz, electronics, and global sounds, creating highly acclaimed works such as Electric Sufi, Digital Prophecy, Divine Shadows, Abu Nawas Rhapsody, and Birds Requiem. As a celebrated collaborator, he has performed with artists including Nguyên Lê, Paolo Fresu, Zakir Hussain, and Dave Holland, and has composed film music for Black Gold and The Amazing Spider-Man.
