The Dream I Dreamed (Jazzed Media, JM1071) features 14 original compositions written by Michael Dees. The vocalist’s style invokes the best of the male jazz vocalist tradition and his compositions are reminiscent of many of the Great American Songbook gems. On The Dream I Dreamed, Michael Dees is accompanied by a core group some of Los Angeles’ finest session musicians including Terry Trotter on piano, Chuck Berghofer on bass, and Steve Schaeffer on drums. Guest artists include Steve Huffsteter on trumpet & flugelhorn, Chuck Manning on tenor sax, Sal Marquez on trumpet, Bob Sheppard on tenor sax & clarinet, Doug Webb on tenor sax and Don Williams on percussion.

The 14 songs on The Dream I Dreamed range in styles from waltzes to ballads, to swinging Dixieland melodies. He opens with “In A Moment”, a swinging, up tempo number that recalls Frank Sinatra’s style in his heyday and great saxophone soloing by Doug Webb. Michael Dees resonant voice is smooth and velvety and instantly connects with the listener on “Look At Me”, “A Kiss”, “I Miss You” and “I’m Home” all of which are romantic ballads. These songs feature great saxophone accompaniment by Bob Sheppard, flugelhornist Steve Huffsteter. Terry Trotter’s comping is memorable and provides exemplary chord progressions.

“So Crazy For You” and “Back In New Orleans” expose another side of Michael Dees’ vocal talents. These songs have a jazzy New Orleans feeling while the jazz waltz “A Long Time Comin’” tells a story that is full of passion and longing. His voice is warm, full of colors and his delivery is spot on as he cuts to the heart of a lyric and sings with beauty and nuance but without excessive ornamentation.

For years Michael Dees sang songs such “A Walk In the Spring Rain,” from the movie of the same name; “What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life”, for the soundtrack of the movie "The Happy Ending", songs on the soundtrack to "Sabrina" starring Harrison Ford and as the singing voice of Frank Sinatra in HBO’s "The Rat Pack."

Overall, all of the original compositions tell a story of Michael Dees’ exceptional prowess as a singer/songwriter. With The Dream I Dreamed, he achieves the level of artistry he introduced on his Capitol Records recordings and "One Single Rose."
