The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the oldest franchises in the National Basketball Association. It all started in 1946, when the team was founded as the “Nationals” in Syracuse.
By 1963, the team was sold and relocated to Philadelphia. It then changed its name to the 76ers, which refers to the city’s revolutionary history and the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.1,2
