Orchid enthusiasts will be pleased that show time is arriving shortly. Tickets can be purchased at the door for the popular San Francisco Orchid Society's annual Orchids in the Park exhibit and sale to be held on Aug. 2-3, 2014.
Come to Golden Gate Park
The venue is San Francisco County Fair Building (Hall of Flowers) across from the entrance to the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Golden Gate Park, 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way, in the Sunset District. Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, admission is $5, seniors at $4 and ages 16 and under are free.
Some come to admire, some come to show, some come to learn and some come to buy.
Take a beauty home
Fifteen vendors are expected at the event, including those from growers who normally show to the public by appointment only. Visitors will find splendid Cattleya; Dendrobium from Papua New Guinea; Chondorhyncha amabilis, Bollea coelestis and Helcia sanguinolenta from Ecuador, Peru and Colombia; Fukiran from Japan; Oncidium; Paphiopedilum and Phragmipediumlady slipper orchids and other genera. Take your favorites away to grace the home.
Tips on tender loving care
For those who come to learn, there are two educational lectures on Saturday, Aug. 2. "How to grow orchids on a windowsill" will be given by Dennis Westler, San Francisco Orchid Society's much-appreciated "Orchid Doctor." The afternoon lecture on orchid care is by Bruce Rogers, author of the best seller "The Orchid Whisperer."
The big event in February
The 63rd Annual Pacific Orchid Exposition, largest event of its kind in the world with 150,000 rare orchids on view, is scheduled for February 19-22, 2015 at Fort Mason's Festival Pavilion.
