Review: Joe DeVito finds the humor in love, life and aging on 'First Date'
Joe DeVito

It is really difficult to capture the excitement, energy and contagious humor of a live comedy show with an album, but Joe DeVito manages to do just that, keeping the laughs coming throughout his hilarious debut live release, First Date. DeVito's musing and amusing delivery is as much a part of his show as the jokes and the crowd at the Brokerage Comedy Club in Bellmore, NY takes his energy and gives it back tenfold in the form of laughter and vocal participation.

Seeing as how the album is entitled First Date, it is only natural that DeVito's love life is a popular topic for him to tear apart with his unique sense of humor. Whether the comedian is sharing the dangers of being 45 and single or analyzing online dating profiles until he comes up with one so frank that it just might work, he always creates laughter that extends far beyond the expected punchline. Comedy fans of a certain age will appreciate DeVito's lesson in the importance of dating someone who knows what side two of an album means.

Throughout the album, DeVito keeps listeners fully engaged by enhancing his intelligent bits on living in New York and the strange existence of cowboys in Texas with clever word play, unexpected segues and a sprinkling of the absurd. His imagery is at times cartoonish, in the best way possible. You can envision each scene that DeVito sets in your mind's eye as he skillfully drives jokes down winding roads of hilarity.

Some of the funniest material on “First Date” comes in the form of bonus tracks at the end of the album. “Old Man Sounds” is comedic genius as DeVito describes the symphony of noises that his body creates at will. “It's not just the pops and snaps and the crackling noises,” DeVito explains before letting out an exhausted groan that sends the live audience into hysterics. “It's also strange, haunted ghostly sounds.”

Although First Date is DeVito's debut live comedy album, he has already had great success appearing on such TV shows as “Last Comic Standing,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and AXS TV’s “Gotham Comedy Live,” where he will also be performing later this week. The album is a polished and hilarious listen that is enjoyable from start to finish.

First Date by Joe DeVito will be released via Rooftop Comedy Productions on Jan. 13, 2015. Click here to pre-order the record on iTunes and keep reading AXS for more comedy news, reviews and tour announcements.
