Reggie Watts is one of the most unique and innovative comedians of his generation. On May 26, he is taking his forward thinking approach to comedy to the next level by appearing live in virtual reality, free of charge.
The comedian is teaming-up with AltspaceVR and JASH to perform in 3D on Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. There will also be a 2D version of the show available on Mac or PC for those who don't have 3D capability. Watts shared the big news via Twitter earlier this month. “Another dream of mine comes true: I’m going to perform in #VR May 26th LIVE in AltspaceVR,” he said. “Check it out: http://altvr.com/reggie #Vrcomedy.”
Watts is no stranger to virtual reality. He performed his project, Waves, at the Sundance Festival earlier this year. The one-of-a-kind show combined animation with live comedy and social issues as has never been done before.
Virtual reality isn't the only place where Watts will be performing in the coming months. He also has shows scheduled at Moogfest in Durham, NC and he will be headlining the 3rd Annual 26th Annual Comedy Festival, presented by The Onion, A.V. Club and truTV, in Chicago on June 4. Watts will then be heading overseas to perform a pair of shows in the Netherlands this July.
Before making it big as a live performer, Watts first gained attention in the comedy world with the hilarious viral videos and comedic web shorts he made for Superdeluxe, Vimeo and CollegeHumor. His one-hour special, “Why Sh*t So Crazy” debuted on Comedy Central in 2010 and he appeared alongside Scott Aukerman on “Comedy Bang! Bang!” from 2012 – 2015. His 2012 TED Talk – the video for which has been seen more than 5 million times – showcased his incredible originality and talent, while encouraging others to open their minds to new ways of thinking.
Watts can currently be seen nightly on “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” on which he serves as the show's bandleader and announcer. He is also one of the co-founders of JASH – along with Sarah Silverman, Tim & Eric and Michael Cera – which shares hilarious videos on a regular basis on its YouTube channel.
