It’s finally here: The season of the witch.
Days after deleting their social media accounts, Radiohead has returned with “Burn the Witch,” the first single from their highly anticipated ninth studio album. Like the best of their music, the new song is moody and moving, with a pulsing string section and Thom Yorke’s ghostly vocals floating over the music. In other words, it sounds like Radiohead. According to a press release, the new single will be available on all digital services (including Spotify!?) on May 4. [UPDATE: "Burn the Witch" is now available on all streaming services]
The band also released a stop-motion video for the song. Directed by Chris Hopewell and produced by Jackknife, the video for “Burn the Witch” finds an out-of-towner taking a tour of a very curious village, before he gets placed in a giant “Wicker Man”-style wooden statue that’s set ablaze. Again, very Radiohead. Watch the video above.
The new song and video follows a unique campaign for the new album. Over the past week, various fans have been receiving flyers reading “Burn the Witch” and Radiohead’s always interesting Dead Air Space website has been deleted as well. However, the band now appears to be relaunching all of their social channels, with refreshed and cleansed Instagram and Twitter accounts. Seems like they’re taking this whole purification motif seriously.

Still no word on an official title or release date for the new album, but it’s safe to assume we’ll hear it around the time Radiohead's summer tour commences later this month.
