Watch: Celine Dion performs emotional tribute to Paris at American Music Awards
ABC

Celine Dion gave powerful tribute in song to the victims of the recent attacks in Paris during her appearance Sunday at the 2015 American Music Awards. The five-time Grammy winner brought members of the audience to tears with her rendition of Edith Piaf's "Hymne à l'amour" at the annual event held on Nov. 22 in Los Angeles at Microsoft Theatre.

CBC described the performance as "the emotional highlight of the evening" in an article posted on Nov. 23. The Canadian international superstar performed the late French chanteuse's 1950 ode to a lost love in her native French language as a montage of images flashed behind her, displaying Paris landmarks such as the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe along with shots of Parisians mourning their loved ones in wake of the violence, which claimed the lives of at least 130 people in the French capitol on Nov. 13.

Dion was introduced by musician/actor Jared Leto. The 30 Seconds to Mars frontman and his band recently played the Bataclan Theatre where 89 of the victims lost their lives during the tragic event.

"Tonight, we honour the victims of the unimaginable violence that has taken place in Paris and around the world," Leto said during his introduction. "The entire world matters, and peace is possible."

In the 4:14 minute video, couples embrace and audience members weep as the "My Heart Will Go On" hitmaker performs the moving ballad, which Piaf wrote for her former lover, French boxer Marcel Cerdan, who died tragically in a plane crash en route to see her perform in New York in 1949. As Dion's voice soars through the song's powerful final notes, the Charlemagne, Quebec raises her arms in the air as the montage concludes with an image of Paris' iconic Eiffel Tower. Fans can check out a video of the performance above.

Prior to the attacks, Dion had announced her first 2016 European dates, which included shows on June 24 - June 25 in Paris at AccorHotels Arena, as well as June 20 - June 21 in Antwerp, Belgium. She will also return home to her native province of Quebec next summer for a series of "special limited engagements." The performances will take place in Montreal and Quebec City beginning July 31 at Montreal's Bell Centre and will wrap up Aug. 25 at Videotron Centre in Quebec City.

Dion recently returned to her hugely successful ongoing residency in Las Vegas to sell out audiences and critical acclaim. She will be performing a pair of special New Year's Eve shows on Dec. 30-31 in Las Vegas at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Tickets for all shows are available at AXS.
