Journey has revealed that drummer Omar Hakim will fill in for longtime drummer Deen Castronovo during the band's upcoming summer tour dates in the U.S. and Canada. The multi-platinum sellers have cited "pending issues" as the reason for the decision.
The "Don't Stop Believin'" hitmakers made the announcement in a news release posted June 18 to their official website at Journey Music. The switch follows in the wake of Castronovo's arrest on Sunday in Oregon on accusations of domestic violence.
Castonovo, who joined Journey in 1998, was arraigned on Monday and charged with misdemeanour assault and menacing. The veteran rocker was released on $20,000 bail with a plea hearing set for June 30.
The Journey news release includes a picture of founding member Neil Schon standing beside Hakim. The ex-Weather Report drummer has an extensive background in jazz, jazz-fusion, funk, pop and rock. Hakim has worked with an impressive list of artists, including: Miles Davis, George Benson, Sting, Carly Simon and Dire Straits, among many others.
"We Journey have made the decision to have Omar Hakim play drums for the band’s upcoming concerts...due to Deen Castronovo’s pending issues," Journey writes in a statement." "We are very grateful to Omar filling in with his musical excellence."
Dates impacted include the band's first-ever performance with an orchestra on June 20 in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl season opener, as well as July 4 in Provo, Utah, at Stadium of Fire. Hakim will also fill during Journey's extensive 16-city coast-to-coast tour of Canada, which kicks off July 6 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at MTS Centre and wraps up Aug. 2 in St. John's, Newfoundland, at Mile One Centre.
The veteran San Francisco prog-rockers have already had a busy year on the road, spending the early part of 2015 touring with The Steve Miller Band and Tower of Power. Journey also teamed up with Santana for a pair of March dates in Mexico and made their Las Vegas debut last month, performing nine shows at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
