Journey founding member Neil Schon will pull double duties when the "Don Stop Believin'" hitmakers launch their Canadian tour leg next month. The veteran Journey guitarist will also serve as opening act in support of his newly released solo collaboration with keyboard whiz Jan Hammer (Jeff Beck, Jon Anderson) and ex-Journey drummer Steve Smith, a double album titled Vortex, which was released on June 23 via Music Theories.
According to an article posted June 26 at Ultimate Classic Rock, the prog-rocker has assembled a formidable band of jazz fusion musicians for the solo gigs, including: Rachel Z (keyboards), Jerry Brooks (bass) and Omar Hakim (drums). Hakim will also be putting in a long night as Journey recently hired him to fill in temporarily to replace longtime drummer Deen Castronovo, who was arrested earlier this month and faces charges of misdemeanour assault and menacing.
The ex-Weather Report drummer took over for Castronovo in a baptism of fire, playing his first gig on June 20 in Los Angeles at the 2015 season opening benefit concert at the Hollywood Bowl as Journey performed their first ever live show with an orchestra. Hakim's debut was a smashing success with ABC News reporting that the show, which donated all proceeds to benefit the Los Angeles Philharmonic, earned a record $1.6 million, earning Journey the honour of notching the highest grossing season opener in the venue's nearly 100 year history.
“I’m very happy I was able to bring Omar Hakim in to help us pull together a very elaborate and complex show at the last minute,” he Schon says in an ABC interview after the concert. “It was a nearly impossible feat, and tall order for anyone, but with Omar’s musical integrity and talent, we pulled it off and had a blast!”
Hakim's next stop with Journey will also be a big show, slated for July 4 in Provo, Utah, at Stadium of Fire. Journey's extensive 16-city coast-to-coast tour of Canada launches July 6 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at MTS Centre and wraps up Aug. 2 in St. John's, Newfoundland, at Mile One Centre.
