CBS Radio’s 3rd annual “The Night Before” concert series couldn’t have picked a better headliner than home-town heroes Metallica to perform at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Saturday February 6. The Metallica-dubbed “Too Heavy For Halftime” show was exactly that, and anyone who thought the Bay Area halftime snub was unjust quickly realized giving the metal icons only 13 minutes would have been un-Justice For All.

Boasting an enormous stage setup, with 50-foot screens as the background for the stage, a huge walkway surrounding the fan-filled “Snake Pit” in the center, the near capacity crowd were on their feet as the Bay Area natives launched into “Creeping Death”, followed by “For Whom The Bell Tolls”, both from their 1984 sophomore album Ride The Lightening. Fast forwarding to their ’97 adrenaline pumping hit “Fuel” as their third, the old-to-new tone was set for the night, which showcased some of the band’s best over their 35-year storied career.

Classics including “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)”, “Ride The Lightning”, and “Master of Puppets”, mixed with post-mainstream juggernauts “Sad But True”, “King Nothing”, and “The Memory Remains” were just some of the highlights of the 18 song, nearly two-and-a-half hour set. The inventive screen setup, with layers of videos and effects sprawling over each of them, reiterated the fact that Metallica are uncontainable, and may not have been a “good fit” for the Super Bowl halftime. James Hetfield and co. took the snub in stride, with the frontman even stating, “We're not a variety show. We're not pop. We're not sparkly, and all that kind of stuff that seems to be what's needed for that."

The full performance is streaming online with pre-orders of CDs or digital download available as well. Check out the full gallery from this set of photos here.
