There exists a plethora of music, and modern technology has only expedited its dissemination, so much so that there is already more than you could ever listen to in one lifetime. One must then prioritize his or her listening habits so that time can be optimized with the best music available. May this list of forthcoming releases help you manage your time, keep you current with the indie rock world, and most importantly, provide aural sustenance to fulfill your musical appetite.

Owen is the solo project of Mike Kinsella (of American Football, Owls and Their / They're / There) and he’s poised to release a new record of, you guessed it, other people’s songs. Kinsella first announced the album on his rather ridiculous Twitter page in a tweet that said he was "super excited to de-amplify / snooze-up some of my all-time favs.”

On Other People’s Songs, Owen covers such artists as Against Me!, Blake Babies, Depeche Mode, Lungfish, Mojave 3, The Promise Ring, and Smoking Popes.

    AC/DC

Rock or Bust is the 15th internationally released studio album from the kings of hard rock. It’s the Australian band’s first new material since 2008, and the first ever with Stevie Young (nephew of both Malcolm and Angus Young) at the helm.

The record is filled with tracks constructed from Angus material discarded from previous albums, and before you write off Rock or Bust as a half-assed attempt to recoup stardom 40-some years after the AC/DC zenith, give it a listen. It may not be Back in Black, but Paste has called it the best AC/DC album in over 20 years, and it just might be. Check out the LP’s first single, “Play Ball.”

    Yo La Tengo

Painful was the sixth record from indie rock heroes, Yo La Tengo. The 1993 release marked a creative shift in the band’s approach, moving from ambient/noise jams to a more melodic-driven sound that falls within the boundaries of dream pop.

Extra Painful is the deluxe double-disc reissue of said album. It includes 12 bonus tracks of demos and other previously unreleased material and celebrates the band’s 30th anniversary.

    Happy birthday Yo La Tengo.

    She & Him

She (Zooey Deschanel) and Him (M. Ward) have also decided to make a record of other people’s songs. With the help of a 20-piece orchestra, the Portland duo took on classics from the ‘30s-‘50s era in their 13-song compilation. When asked what drew her to the oldies aesthetic, Deschanel replied:

“If I listen to the radio, I’m going to stop on songs that sound warm. I like particularly classic music I guess. I like the way music recorded live sounds and the warmth of old recordings. We just tried to recreate that in the studio.”

And that warmth arrives just in time for the holidays. Pop on “Stay Awhile” while you hang up your stockings and eat candy canes and I guarantee everything will feel just right.
