Listen: Ellie Goulding releases free download of 'O Holy Night' cover
Ellie Goulding

U.K. singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding premiered her cover of "O Holy Night" on Dec. 16. She released the song for free as a thank you to fans for their support this year.

Goulding experienced another exceptional year in the pop music scene with the release of her third album, Delirium, in November. For the two year break in between 2013's Halycon and Delirium, she tided over fans with top-notch collaborations with artists like Calvin Harris and Major Lazer while supplying the 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack with the immaculate "Love Me Like You Do" this year. Her latest single, "On My Mind," is proving to be another hit as well. To cap off the year, she turns things down a bit on "O Holy Night."

Pop stars usually use the opportunity to cover "O Holy Night" as a moment of power, especially in the case of the Mariah Carey's epic 1994 version. Goulding takes a more delicate approached to the tune, employing her light vocals to conjure up some Christmas magic. "Fall on your knees / O hear the angels' voices," she sings. An angel can be heard alright on Ellie's understated and gorgeous rendition.

"O Holy Night" is now available for free download. Goulding's Delirium album debuted at no. 3 on both the U.S. Billboard chart and in the U.K. last month. She has not yet announced the follow-up single to "On My Mind," which has reached no. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She is also up for her first Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance for "Love Me Like You Do."
