As if Sheryl Crow, Smokey Robinson, and Diana Ross weren’t enough; Jazz Aspen Snowmass has added R&B legend Booker T. Jones and jazz-funk fusion bassist Marcus Miller to the lineup. The groovy double bill will take place in the heart of the June Experience on Sunday, June 26 at the Benedict Music Tent in Aspen, Colorado. Tickets are on sale now.
Booker T. Jones will be performing his Stax Revue, a look back at the hits of the groundbreaking Memphis R&B label of which Booker T. and the MGs were the house band. Booker T. is a deft showman, and as master of ceremonies regales the audience with personal anecdotes from his time with Stax as well as busting out classic Stax hits like "Green Onions," "Hang 'Em High," "Time is Tight," and "Melting Pot." Jones is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member, has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and is a four-time Grammy winner. He has also bridged genres by playing keys with such artists as Ray Charles and Neil Young.
Two-time Grammy winner Marcus Miller will be performing his newest album and Blue Note label debut Afrodeezia. The album was inspired by Miller’s work as a UNESCO Artist for Peace and a spokesperson for UNESCO’s Slave Route Project. Afrodeezia was recorded around the world in locations such as Morocco, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans and Los Angeles. Marcus had this to say about the album slated for release in March 2016. "For this project I collaborated with musicians from West Africa, South America, the Caribbean, the southern US and the large northern cities of the US. This was my way of paying tribute to the long journey of my African ancestors who became African-Americans. The melodies and rhythms they carried with them from Africa have EXPLODED into a dizzying array of musical styles and genres that have changed the world."
