Interview: Trace Adkins talks about his new film 'Hickok', album and tour

Trace Adkins is a very busy man. He's co-starring in the upcoming film "Hickok" while getting on the road for another tour, and just released his latest album Something's Going On in March. AXS conducted a phone interview with the veteran country artist to discuss how he feels his sound has evolved since the start of his career and what made him want to expand his acting career with the new movie. Read what he had to tell us below, and you can watch the trailer for "Hickok" by using the media player included with this article.

AXS: You've been able to sustain your career for decades. How do you think your sound has evolved on this new album compared to the Trace Adkins who started out 20 years ago?

Trace Adkins: I don't know that my sound has evolved that much as far as the style of music that I do, but I listen back to those albums from 20 years ago and I like my voice better now than I did then. I listen to those recordings from 20 years ago and my voice, to me sounds a little thin and not as warm. Now I like the sound of my voice better. It's matured and I think sounds warmer and that's an evolution that may not appeal to everyone else, but it does to me.

AXS: Have you had any tour stops thus far that have stuck out for you?

TA: We just got back from the one I was most anticipating and that was a USO tour. We went to Sicily and a couple of [military] bases in Italy and Spain.

AXS: At the same time, you're co-starring in "Hickok" with Kris Kristofferson and Luke Hemsworth. Music fans may not know that you've been acting steadily for almost a decade now. What was it about this movie that attracted you?

TA: The thing that attracted me to this project was getting to work with Kris Kristofferson. I was not going to pass that up. If I had a chance to be in a movie with Kris I was going to do it. It was just as simple as that; I didn't think twice about it. When they said Kris was in it, I was like I'm in.

AXS: How was the experience of making the film?

TA: The whole thing was fun. It was a good experience. I enjoy doing those westerns. I sometimes feel like I'm a man in the wrong century anyway, and so the westerns give me a opportunity to live that out. As far as any particular moment in the film, there's a pretty good fight between myself and Hickok. I don't want to give too much away but it was pretty good.

AXS: How does acting compare to music? What was it that made you want to add that to your resume in the first place?

TA: It was a challenge. Then when I started doing it, I realized it's very much like my favorite thing in the music business, and those are the days we go in the studio with these incredibly talented, creative musicians and you take a raw piece of material and turn it into something cool hopefully. Those are my favorite days in the music business and that's what a movie set or television set is like. You're surrounded by these incredibly talented, creative people. It's a stimulating environment and I get a kick out of it.
