Emulating styles of country music legends Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton, with her own pop twist, Kacey Musgraves brought her Country & Western Rhinestone Revue to the iconic Fillmore in San Francisco for two sold-out nights.  AXS caught the first night, Sept. 16, watching Musgraves showcase what makes her sound a modern genre-crossing success.

Her band filed out with the neon cactus background, with jackets lit up like the Electric Horseman, picking up their instruments and beginning to play, with stage lights slowly rising as the Texas-native was announced and walked out on stage.  Musgraves and co. began the night with “Pageant Material,” the title cut off her critically acclaimed second major-label album, which she mainly drew from throughout the night.

“Biscuits,” “Merry Go ‘Round,” and “Dime Store Cowgirl” were just a few of the highlights during the 19-song set.  Musgraves also digs into her own favorites, covering other artists with her own flare. The melodic “Step Off” drifted into Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds,” Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart” (which really isn’t a cover considering Musgraves co-wrote the song), and ended the night with the Lee Hazlewood’s “These Boots Were Made For Walkin’.”  Probably the most impressive covers were Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy,” starting as an almost acapella performance before kicking into a double-time country swing, TLC’s “No Scrubs,” taking on a bluesy undertone with a hand-clapping beat provided by the audience.

Already a multiple Country Music Awards nominee and winner, Musgraves was recently part of the star studded country tribute with the song “Forever Country,”a melody combining John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” and Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again,”celebrating the 50th anniversary of the CMAs.  The track, which features Nelson and Parton, are joined by Miranda Lambert, Alabama, Brad Paisley, George Strait, and Trisha Yearwood, to name a few.

Kacey Musgraves will tour the festival circuit for the rest of the year, and will open for icon George Strait in Las Vegas on Dec. 2 and 3.
