Bio: Bebel Gilberto
Bebel Gilberto has been enchanting fans and critics worldwide since her appearance on the global music scene with her solo debut in 1986. Bebel presents songs from her long-awaited new album, João, to be released in August 2023. The recording is a collection of songs made famous by her father João Gilberto, who passed away in 2019 after a 70 year career in music, and is widely regarded as the 'father of Bossa Nova music'. Bebel began singing with him as a small child and the songs she sings tonight have been with her all her life. Says Bebel - “João” is a love letter to my father. Since my first album I’ve never really covered any of my Dad’s music. Now it’s time to present to the public the songs from João Gilberto that have influenced me since I was born and even before”.
'The predominantly acoustic album recalls the intense musicality of her father, João Gilberto, blended with both the gossamer subtlety of Astrud Gilberto (her father’s first wife) and the meatier expressiveness of her mother, vocalist Miúcha. A triumph of richly expressive understatement with a distinctly 1960s bossa feel.' Jazz Times
'Since emerging as a solo artist in the mid 1980s, Gilberto’s music has been calming on the ear yet emotionally resonant. Her smoky vocals and bossa-nova arrangements are the sound of stirred feelings; she can move the soul with the faintest brushstrokes.' Pitchfork
'Mesmerizing. Gilberto’s voice easily drifts over the production, but there’s often a sharp kick to her phrasing to counterbalance the engrossing instrumentals.' Rolling Stone
'The embodiment of breathy Brazilian cool.' Entertainment
