Celine Dion will be the next recipient of the Icon Award at this month's Billboard Music Awards. The magazine and production company made the announcement Wednesday via press release, just days after making public that Britney Spears will be recognized with the Millennium Award at the ceremony on May 22.
The Icon Award is similar to the Millennium Award in that it recognizes an artist's career and contributions to the music industry; however, the Icon Award is considered to be one of the most prestigious Billboard Music Awards. The Icon Award was handed out yearly from 2011 to 2014, with Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Prince and Jennifer Lopez receiving it. No winner was selected in 2015, making Dion the fifth person to have been recognized in the category.
Part of receiving the Icon Award is performing at the ceremony, and per the press release Dion will present the T-Mobile Arena crowd with her version of the Queen hit "The Show Must Go On."
Over her career, the singer has earned six Billboard Music Awards out of dozens of nominations. Most recently, she was recognized for having the Top Canadian Album in 2008 for her record Taking Chances. She's also had four records reach number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart, placing a dozen within the Top 10 and 17 of her albums on that list overall.
Being recognized with the Icon Award is no doubt a bright spot in a tough year for Dion. Her husband Rene Angelil lost his long battle with cancer on Jan. 14, and two days later her brother Daniel also passed away from the disease. But even in the face of this tremendous loss she has persisted, and will be spending the majority of 2016 once again performing for audiences both in the United States and her native Canada.
Ahead for Dion is a continuation of her residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas from May 17 to Jun. 4, followed by a series of shows at Montreal's Bell Centre beginning Jul. 31, before returning to Las Vegas in September. Tickets to her Las Vegas shows are on sale now through AXS.
The 2016 Billboard Music Awards will take place on Sunday, May 22 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The ceremony will also be nationally televised on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
