Bio: Ab-Soul

One of the most respected and skilled wordsmiths of his time, Ab-Soul (do not forget the dash) has been unwavering in his delivery of intricate bars and personified mystique to the rap game for over twenty years. Top Dawg Entertainment’s legendary lyricist has developed a cult following from his projects like the critically-acclaimed “Control System”(2012), the billboard-charting “These Days...” (2014), and broke through into commercial success with his most recent release “Herbert” (2022). Known for his unmatched narrative, wordplay and double-entendres, Ab-Soul has created a lasting legacy within the conscious rap game and continues to inspire those after him.

Ab-Soul, born Herbert Anthony Stevens IV, is a Carson, CA native. Growing up, his family owned the iconic “Magic Disc” record shop in Carson, exposing Soul to music at an early age. Always encouraged to explore his musical and performing talents, Soul was predestined for greatness. At the age of eleven, Soul was abruptly diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome. This hospitalized him for months and caused young Soul to lose much of his vision, impairing him with an extreme sensitivity to light which ultimately led to his iconic sunglass style. This condition never held Soul back from continuing to pursue his dreams, and eventually the buzz around Carson reached Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith. Soul began recording in Top’s Carson, CA home studio and a year later, joined the Top Dawg Entertainment crew in 2006. Soul shopped his mixtapes around, including his “Longterm” mixtape in 2009 and collaborated with his fellow Black Hippy members ScHoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay Rock on multiple projects. In the

midst of Black Hippy’s growing popularity, Soul released his debut album in 2011 “Longterm Mentality”, which quickly became an underground classic, showcasing Soul’s gifted lyrical abilities to the world. Soul’s own fan base began to grow and shortly after his first studio album, he released his second titled “Control System” in 2012. This project further expanded and deepened his cult following, and received critical acclaim.

Flash forward to 2014 and Ab-Soul’s reputation as a gifted wordsmith is propelled even farther forward with his third studio album “These Days...” debuting at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 200 charts. While gearing up for his fourth studio album, Soul collaborated with artists like Bas and Da$h to drop a couple singles eventually leading to his full length release “Do What Thou Wilt” with features from ScHoolboy Q, Isaiah Rashad, Mac Miller, Da$h and Thundercat.

After a six year hiatus, Soul began dropping singles like “Hollandaise”, “Moonshooter”, “Do Better (feat. Zacari) and “Gang’Nem (feat. Fre$h)” in 2022 as a warm up to his long-anticipated fifth studio album “Herbert”. This eighteen track project is his most personal body of work, speaking on topics ranging from drug abuse, suicide, love, and growing up vision-impaired in Carson, CA. This project also boasts a prestigious feature list including Joey Bada$$, Big Sean, Russ, Jhene Aiko, Lance Skiiiwalker, Zacari, SiR, Punch, Alameda, and Ambré. Today, Ab-Soul continues to remind the world of hip-hop that he is truly the long lost lyricist and that there are still many stories left untold.

Bio: Earl Sweatshirt

Earl Sweatshirt is the virtuosic byproduct of Los Angeles’ fertile ground where hip hop sowed its seeds and historic cultural movements were born. The prodigiously-gifted writer, lyricist and producer grew from a zeitgeist of which contemporary collectives in hip hop today are predicated. And while most movements are fleeting as soon as they arrive, Earl pushed forward, documented his growth and self-discovery on record and cemented himself as one of the foremost culturally relevant MC’s in the game, one who never strayed away too far from his Los Angeles beat-scene roots. His debut album Doris arrived in 2013 and introduced the world to a more realized vision from him than his seminal mixtape Earl that was released three years prior when he was just 16-years-old. He followed Doris with the critically-lauded I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside in 2015, further exploring the depth of his technical dexterity with more swagger than prior releases. Three years later, he released Some Rap Songs in 2018, the tightly wrought album that found a more self-aware and mature Earl in his reflection of being in the public eye since a teenager, coupled with the reconciling of the death of his father. Enter Feet of Clay, the conceptual 2019 project that continues the written narrative of Earl’s life in today’s societal landscape and world-view in real-time. Fast forward to 2022; Earl returned to the scene with critically acclaimed, SICK!

Bio: Dom Kennedy

Dom Kennedy graced the streets of Los Angeles in 2008 with the release of his debut project, titled 25th Hour. The Leimert Park native, born August 22, 1984, made a name for himself by promoting, distributing and, along with Jason Madison, co-producing the 25th Hour mix-tape. After receiving local and nationwide praise, Dom followed up in the spring of 2009 with the independent release of Future Street/Drug Sounds, an all-original collection that seized the attention of major labels, blogs and Hip Hop fans worldwide.

In the fall of 2009, Dom teamed up with DJ Sour Milk of Power 106 and the Los Angeles Leakers to produce his third and most recent project, titled Best After Bobby. On March 25th, 2010 Dom released From The Westside, With Love a free download, that plays like a true studio album. This release would legitimize his fan base nation-wide, receiving over 65 thousand downloads. Dom remembers, at the age of 12, when he would listen to the great Hip-Hop records of that time envisioning what life would be like if the world could hear what he had to say. He would walk around the house free styling, and performing for his mom and sisters who were amazed by the amount of talent he possessed at such a young age. Leimert Park, whats cool? Dom explains, is a common theme used in my music to show the significance of the neighborhood that birthed me. Doms responsibility to his family, his neighborhood and the younger generation, is what drives his dedication to Hip Hop. I know what rap did for me when I was younger and how it affected mea chance to do that and give it back, I had to. Dom often speaks about his feeling of obligation to the youth. When I would listen to Outkast for example, it would take me right to the streets of Savannah, GA where I could almost feel myself riding in a Cadillac with Big Boi and Dre. It gave me that sense of security, that acceptance, as if I was apart of something. Its beyond important for the kids today to see that they can do it too, I dont mind being the example.

As Dom got older he began to appreciate the music as an art form thus, allowing him to identify with an evolving culture. He understood the art of music and was able to utilize this understanding as an avenue for self-expression. His language now portrays a level of poise and maturity that gives evidence to his musical genius. Im probably the best Kennedy after Bobby Dom puts in plain words and explains, this shows the connection I feel with being a leader and someone people can look up to in the future to speak for generations, always with style and presence. Hello world, Ive arrived, is Doms motto for everyone. His main objective is to make a global impact through music so that his message lives on.

Dom has been verbally endorsed by many, including John Monopoly, Kenny Burns, Rick Ross, Taz Arnold of Sa-Ra, and The Hundreds just to name a few. Where a career in music was once a dream for Dom Kennedy, it has now become a reality.

Bio: Chevy Woods

Pittsburgh native Chevy Woods’ epitomizes the mantra “when hard work meets talent.” Born Kevin Woods, Chevy grew up in the Hazelwood section of Pittsburgh with sports as his primary goal and Rap on the peripheral. An elite student-athlete and All American, he earned an athletic scholarship from Robert Morris University. Known at the time as Kev The Hustla, Woods balanced dabbling in music while grappling with the temptation of fast money from selling drugs. Scholar by day and hustling by night, Chevy’s love of rapping went from a hobby to his main focus. Eventually the risks of drug-dealing never outweighed the rewards with Chevy ultimately shifting all of his energy towards a career in music. His hard work and dedication to his craft would lead to Chevy developing a friendship with fellow Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa at ID Labs’ studio in 2004. The chemistry between the pair resulted in Woods appearing on seminal Wiz mixtapes including Grow Season and Prince of the City Pt. 2 . Woods and Khalifa’s creative bond would blossom from frequent collaborators to labelmates - with Wiz recruiting Chevy to join Taylor Gang. Serving as Wiz’s hype man on the road during his early years, Woods developed into a seasoned artist and performer with 20 tours under his belt - collaborating and sharing stages with the likes of Snoop Dogg, ASAP MOB, Joey Badass and Pro Era . Bio: Curren$y

New Orleans rapper and Hip-Hop connoisseur Curren$y thrives on making music on his own terms. With his “Jet Life” mantra about living life to the fullest, the savvy rhyme spitter (why do you think they call him “Spitta”?) is focused on a lyrical devotion to the truth and authenticity. It’s because of this ethos that the man born Shante Anthony Franklin has transcended any regional rap stereotypes to become a favorite of bloggers, critics, fans and everyone in between. Now aligned with Atlantic Records., the plan is to let Spitta be himself, but have even more people get acquainted with the Jet (Just Enjoy This Sh*t) Life.

Inspired by a litany of Hip-Hop heavyweights (“You’re putting your voice on top of some shit, you gotta say something.”) including Slick Rick, Snoop Dogg, Camp Lo, DJ Quick, A Tribe Called Quest, OutKast and 8Ball & MJG, by 2002 the young Curren$y took his talents to Master P. Signing a recording deal with No Limit Records, he was a member of the 504 Boyz. Only two years later, he switched over to Cash Money Records, becoming the marquee artist of Lil Wayne’s then fledgling Young Money Records. The experience with the hometown labels taught him not only how to be a team player but about the type of artist he wanted to be.

“I was in other places. The verse before would be about possibly decapitating somebody with a shotgun and boatloads of cocaine,” recalls Curren$y. “So young me was like, so I shot him too and I got two keys out of the ten. Then I would try to sneak in something else about how I got the newest Jordans and this that and third to still be myself.”

Curren$y went for self in late 2007 when he formally left the Young Money fold. An album called Music To Fly To was recorded for the label but never released. After walking away from the Lil Wayne co-sign, Curren$y began releasing mixtapes (Life At 30,000 Feet, Independence Day, et al.) to let fans know his talents didn’t go to waste when he was sitting on the shelf. Off the strength of his mixtapes, Curren$y earned a spot on the 2009 Freshmen cover of XXL Magazine (December 2008 issue), labeling him as one of Hip-Hop’s most promising acts.

Labels began sniffing around for Curren$y’s services around this time, but he preferred to remain independent. “The rap game, I didn’t know the politics of it until I was completely dolo in making the music that I make. I started going to meetings and realizing how the machine was set up.”

Spitta was increasing his music business IQ but was still adamant about not compromising his art. “Any song that an artist gives you, if there’s a world for him out there, it’s going to do what it do,” he says. “It doesn’t have to sound like whatever’s popping on the radio. It has to sound like that artist because that’s what people want.”

The New Orleans native moved to New York City because he felt that the creative energy there would only help him bolster his movement. “It was just smarter for my hustle to be somewhere where everything is right at my fingertips,” he says. “It just so happened that the city was fucking with me. I felt the love the

whole time and I still do. When I got out here to New York, I was able to be with so many people absolutely on the grind. I could shoot a video every day, and they wanted to do it. Once I got all that work done, people [back home] came out of their shells and said I can do this. Now I’m assembling a team in the city of people that are talented and I’m working with them as well.”

To call Curren$y output of music prolific would be an understatement. In 2009 Curren$y released This Ain’t No Mixtape, via Amalgam Digital, and the same year released another album, Jet Files. He also aligned with ex-Roc-a-fella Records head honcho Dame Dash and his new DD172 venture. The result was in 2010, Curren$y would again drop two albums, Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk 2, via Dash’s DD172 label with distribution from Def Jam Record. Throughout this time Spitta was receiving acclaim for his music, and videos, as well as making moves with lifestyle and streetwear brands like Married to the Mob, Diamond supply and Rocksmith. An avid automobile fan and collector, he also has a couple of car clubs (Boxed Sets with Chuck English from rap group the Cool Kids, and Cruise Life in New Orleans with his manager/business partner and long time friend Mousa Hamdan).

Yes, Curren$y is living the good life, but don’t make the mistake of calling him some type of stoner rapper. “When you rapping about weed and kicking it, how pissed off can people be with you. dog?,” he observes. “If that’s really what you doing. Just don’t be a studio chiller. Everybody wants to get on with this fucking weed rap. It’s not weed rap. There’s no stoner rap. It’s not a genre, that’s bullshit. Anybody that’s doing that should be kicked in the balls because that’s some gimmick shit. Four bars ago you were barely smoking, dog, and now you’re smoking a doobie.”

The charismatic Curren$y is living, breathing example of that tried and true quote from from Confucius: “Picking a job you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”

“I hit the ultimate liq. I watch basketball like, ‘Yo, they’re getting paid to play’,” says Curren$y. “This is the equivalent. Yeah, it’s work, but the trade off is pretty G’d up.” Now that’s the Jet Life.
