Lorde was born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor in New Zealand.1
As a teen, she entered a talent show at her middle school. Footage of her performance made its way to an agent, who signed her when she was just 12 years old.1
She signed with her first record label, Universal Music Group (UMG), in 2009. After a few years of honing her voice and style, at just 16, she released The Love Club EP, a self-released EP, in 2012.1
