Sorry, there are no Cynic headlines.
Sorry, there are no Cynic dates.
Cynics at their root are essentially truth seekers who challenged the
myth of social conventions by asking people to detach and not let the
outer world determine their sense of identity. It was the Cynics who
coined the word 'Cosmopolitan', which means 'belonging to no state' or 'a citizen of the universe'.
Diogenes, one of the better known proponents of the school of Cynics,
advocated salvation from worry and conflict in life by looking inward
for happiness rather than grasping towards the external world, or
chasing after possessions. He claimed the essence of virtue to be
self-control or disciplining the mind. Diogenes was often seen to be
strolling about with a lamp in broad daylight and when asked what it
was for, he would reply "I'm looking for an honest man."
