Beloved television icon and entertainment pioneer, Ellen DeGeneres' distinctive comic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearances through her work today on television, in film and in the literary world.

Ellen DeGeneres has made a home for herself in the daytime arena with her hit syndicated talk show, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." The show, now in its sixth season, recently won four Daytime Emmys including, Outstanding Talk Show Host for the fourth year in a row. The show has now earned a total of 25 Daytime Emmy Awards during its five seasons. Additionally, DeGeneres won two People's Choice Awards for Favorite Daytime Talk Show Host and Favorite Funny Female Star for four years in a row. DeGeneres also won the Johnny Carson Producers of the Year Award in Variety Television from the Producers Guild in 2005 and 2006.

DeGeneres was most recently voted "Best Daytime Talk-Show Host" by Parade.com readers and was voted "Favorite TV Personality" by The Harris Poll's annual favorite television star list beating out Oprah Winfrey and Jay Leno. In addition, DeGeneres was included in MSNBC's "Power players who shape your TV habits" and was honored with Television Week's Syndication Personality of the Year. DeGeneres was voted number one in Oxygen's "50 Funniest Woman Alive" special in the company of such comedic legends as Carol Burnett and Lily Tomlin, and has been included in Time magazine's 100 most influential people. DeGeneres was also just chosen to be the newest face for CoverGirl. The campaign will premiere in December 2008.

DeGeneres continues to host Ellen's Really Big Show for TBS. The one-hour variety special features performances by top talents from the worlds of comedy and music. The special will take place at HBO and AEG Live's The Comedy Festival (TCF) at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and air on TBS in November. DeGeneres will also headline the "Just for Laughs: A Very Funny Festival" which will launch in Chicago in June 2009.

Ellen DeGeneres, or simply Ellen, is a well-known comedian, actress, and author.1 While she started as a stand-up comedian, it was Ellen (1994-98), The Ellen Show (2001-02), and The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2003-2022) that made her a household name.2

In 2008, the comedian married Australian actress Portia de Rossi, born Amanda Lee Rogers. Portia is known for her roles in Arrested Development and Ally McBeal.3 The pair are strong advocates for the LGBTQ+ community.4

Ellen has won multiple awards and hosted big events such as The Grammy Awards in 1996 and 1997 and The Academy Awards in 2007 and 2014.2

Ellen DeGeneres’ Background

Ellen was born in Metairie, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans.5 Early in her career, she was a stand-up comedian, and in 1981, she got a job as an MC at Clyde’s Comedy Club.

In 1986, Ellen’s television journey began. She performed a stand-up routine on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and this led to more TV gigs.

In 1994, she landed her own sitcom called Ellen. Eventually, it was cancelled, and she came back with another sitcom called The Ellen Show in 2001.6

Following this, in 2003, she became a daytime television host. The Ellen DeGeneres Show was a huge success with dozens of Emmy wins and around 3,000 episodes.6

Ellen was also the voice of Dory in the animated movie Finding Nemo in 2003 and Finding Dory in 2016.7

Ellen DeGeneres has a long list of accolades. Some of her biggest achievements include:

  • Presidential Medal of Freedom (2016): Ellen was awarded this honor by former President Obama for her contribution to LGBT equality in the US.8

  • Hollywood Walk of Fame Star (2012): Ellen DeGeneres received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was given to her by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.10
