Matt Mays & El Torpedo Biography

Matt Mays & El Torpedo is Matt Mays (guitar, vocals), Jay Smith (guitar, vocals), Andy Patil (bass, vocals), and Tim Jim Baker (drums). Since forming in 2003 to perform shows in support of Matt's self-titled debut album the band has toured Canada countless times as well as performing numerous dates in the US and the UK.

From the first listen, it's obvious that they have that indefinable element that carries a group's music beyond the sum of its parts. "It's one of those things that you couldn't really construct with anyone," claims Mays' of the band's chemistry. "It's a really natural solidification in music of four friends who like, listen to and laugh at all the same things."

The group skillfully captured this unity on their self-titled album released in Canada on Sonic Records in 2005 and a year later in the USA on the 00.02.59 imprint. The album was co-produced by the band and Grammy award winner Don Smith (Tom Petty, Keith Richards, Traveling Wilburys). "He was all about the vibe we had," says Mays of the famed producer. "If a take had a lot of mojo and some mistakes, we'd keep that one over a perfect take." The first single "Cocaine Cowgirl" was a massive hit and the album went on to win 4 ECMAs in 2006 (Album of the Year, Group of the Year, Rock Recording of the Year, Single of the Year).

Following the success of the Matt Mays & El Torpedo album, Matt and El Torpedo drummer Tim Jim Baker produced the When The Angels Make Contact soundtrack album which was a huge stylistic leap in several directions and was noteworthy in that the film the music was composed for never actually existed. A trailer can still be located at www.whentheangelsmakecontact.com . The project went on to receive rave reviews and two JUNO nominations. Matt toured Canada with an eight piece band performing the album in it's entirety with a full multi-media show showing select clips from the film throughout the performances.

In late 2007 Matt, Tim, Andy, and Jay headed to a remote studio in the south of England to commence work on a new Matt Mays & El Torpedo record with producer Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy). They've not been heard from since…
