About Puscifer

What is Puscifer?

It’s a band of three creative confidants, namely Mat Mitchell, Carina Round, and Maynard James Keenan. It’s a vehicle for sonic and visual storytelling on stages worldwide and on screen through videos, animation, content, and more. It’s indelibly left its mark everywhere, releasing a series of acclaimed albums, selling out famed venues, probing the lineups of Coachella, Bonnaroo, and other festivals, and even curating their own touring festival, Sessanta. They’ve provided what was essentially the soundtrack to the first season of “Yellowstone,” and their albums regularly land on the top 30 of the Billboard Top 200. They’ve caused a ruckus on late-night television, with appearances on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and the “The Late Show.”

At the same time, Puscifer has welcomed a revolving door of collaborators, from musicians like Greg Edwards, Gunnar Olsen, and Sarah Jones to remixers including Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Phantogram, and Sir Mix-A-Lot, and even actors such as Bob Odenkirk and Milla Jovovich. It’s also a universe for the (mis)adventures of original characters: Billy D, (his wife) Hildy Berger, Major Douche, and Special Agent Dick Merkin, It’s a 21st-century freak show where anything goes, everyone is welcome, and nothing is off-limits.

Puscifer

Puscifer is a creative playground for the enigmatic Maynard James Keenan, best known as the frontman of Tool and A Perfect Circle. Operating as a shapeshifting collective of musicians and artists, Puscifer blends industrial rock, trip-hop, and comedy into a singular, immersive experience. The project is known for its defiance of traditional music industry norms, often incorporating improvisational comedy, elaborate costumes, and multimedia elements into their work.

What started as a sketch on HBO's Mr. Show has now evolved into a powerhouse of experimental rock with a dedicated cult following.1 Their music ranges from hauntingly atmospheric to rhythmically aggressive, always underscored by Keenan’s distinctive vocals and sharp lyrical wit.

For fans looking to witness this unique blend of sonic experimentation and theatrical performance, you can score Puscifer tickets now on AXS.

Puscifer’s Background

Puscifer originated in the mid-1990s, initially appearing as a fictional band fronted by Keenan in the comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David. While the name was first used for comedic effect, Keenan officially launched Puscifer as a serious musical endeavor around 2003, first under the name Umlaut.1,2

Unlike his other bands, it was designed as a “premiere improvisational hardcore band" allowing Keenan to collaborate with a rotating cast of musicians, including Mat Mitchell and Carina Round, who became core members.

The project released its debut studio album, V Is for Vagina, in 2007, which established their groove-oriented, electronic-industrial sound.3 This release marked a significant turning point, proving that the project had legs beyond its comedic origins. By operating independently and releasing music on their own label, Puscifer cemented their reputation as a fiercely autonomous entity in the rock world.
