Puscifer originated in the mid-1990s, initially appearing as a fictional band fronted by Keenan in the comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David. While the name was first used for comedic effect, Keenan officially launched Puscifer as a serious musical endeavor around 2003, first under the name Umlaut.^1,2

Unlike his other bands, it was designed as a “premiere improvisational hardcore band" allowing Keenan to collaborate with a rotating cast of musicians, including Mat Mitchell and Carina Round, who became core members.
