It’s been nearly a decade since the three remaining members of Led Zeppelin shared a concert stage, but the women of Zepparella are keeping the spirit of the legendary band alive. On April 22, the tribute act brings the music of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers to the Gothic Theatre (click here for tickets) in Englewood, Colo., in a show presented by local classic rock station 103.5 The Fox. The band continues a run of dates through May, when they perform at The Viper Room in West Hollywood, Calif., followed by a pair of dates later in the year. The complete itinerary can be found below.
Zepparella was formed in San Francisco in 2004 by drummer Clementine, who takes over the John Bonham role alongside guitarist Gretchen Menn, bassist Angeline Saris and singer Noelle Doughty. The band’s sets tackle songs from throughout Zeppelin’s career, from “Dazed and Confused” and “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” from their 1968 self-titled debut to “Kashmir” and “In My Time of Dying” from 1975’s Physical Graffiti. However, there’s one song the band refuses to perform live.
“We need to leave something sacred,” Clementine told the St. Joseph (Mo.) News-Press in 2014. “We always say that if you hear us do ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ it’ll be the last show we ever play.”
Freed from the pressure of replicating one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most beloved anthems, Zepparella puts its own formidable talents to the test. Menn studied under a classical guitarist and lists Eric Johnson, Frank Zappa and Jeff Beck as influences, while Saris’ tastes are even more eclectic, ranging from jazz to speed metal to Cuban rhythms. Doughty, who, in assuming the Robert Plant role, has arguably the most challenging task, is a Zeppelin fan through and through—she met Menn while waiting to go backstage at a Plant concert in Berkeley, Calif.
