Billboard Music Awards executive producer Mark Bracco teased some details about the May 22 live ceremony telecast in a May 19 Billboard report. Apparently, the show is going to offer some Kleenex-ready moments and attendees and viewers alike should brace themselves. He said, “The show is going to be filled with a lot of emotion.”
A huge lineup of stars is slated to turn out for the 24th annual live BBMA event which will be broadcast coast to coast on ABC from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Among them are special award recipients Britney Spears and Celine Dion. Spears is receiving the Billboard Millennium Award and will open the show with what Bracco describes as a “kick-a** medley” of her greatest hits. He added, “It’s going to be her with a couple dozen dancers, plus costume changes, and she's going to walk through her catalog.”
Spears has been busy. Her “Piece of Me” Las Vegas show has received rave reviews and she just launched a new mobile video game called Britney Spears: American Dream. Players help a pop star rise through the ranks from playing local gigs to becoming a superstar. Spears certainly knows a lot about that with her Mickey Mouse Club beginning leading to international superstardom. The Millennium Award recognizes her outstanding achievements and influence in the music industry. She joins an elite group of artists like Beyoncé’ and Whitney Houston in receiving this year’s honor.
Celine Dion’s first televised performance since her husband and brother’s deaths will undoubtedly be one of many emotional moments in the evening. She is reportedly singing the Freddie Mercury tribute song “The Show Must Go On” and is symbolic of her bravery to return to the spotlight following these tremendous personal losses. Dion will receive the Billboard Icon Award and joins giant stars like Jennifer Lopez, Stevie Wonder and Prince. Dion has sold a staggering 200 million albums worldwide over the course of her 25-year-plus career. She is deemed to have one of the most beautiful voices in the music industry and continues to inspire generations of aspiring artists who follow her.
Furthermore, Bracco urges “you don’t want to miss Pink” (who will be performing her song “Just Like Fire”) and he also describes Madonna’s meticulously-planned Prince tribute as “one of the emotional highlights of the show.” Beyond these wonders that await us, Adele will debut her “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” video and a bevy of brilliant performers are set to take the stage including Rihanna, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainor, Kesha and more.
Overall, we can’t wait to see who walks away with the top prize in the Top Artist category that is brimming with some of the biggest names in music. Nominees are Taylor Swift, Adele, Drake, The Weeknd and Justin Bieber. Talk about the ultimate showdown! Plus, there’s the fashion, the emotional acceptance speeches and the potential for some celebrity PDA. Plenty of unforgettable moments make the Billboard Music Awards one of the most highly-anticipated award shows of the year.
Raise your hand if you’re ready to get your BBMA party on! Be sure to tune into the live action on May 22 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
