When a song is great you know it. It resonates in your soul, stirs your senses and brings an emotional response. When a song is great, devoid of production, stripped down and naked, and still captures your heart, you know it’s great because it’s real. That’s what an audience at the Coronet theater in Los Angeles, on April 27, got to witness first hand when Kevin Griffin, singer-songwriter and founder of the 90s band Better Than Ezra, performed.

Kevin Griffin formed the New Orleans-based rock alternative band Better Than Ezra whose debut record went double-platinum with the success of the #1 song “Good”. The band continued through the next decade to produce top 10 hits and they continue to tour and produce new recordings like their recent 2014 release All Together Now, but Griffin has recently produced, written and co-written songs for other artists like Sugarland, James Blunt, Taylor Swift, to name a few. He co-wrote “Stuck Like Glue” a song recorded by Sugarland reaching #1 on the single charts in 2010.

In an intimate setting, stark stage, with acoustic guitars and one percussionist, Kevin Griffin reeled through songs, made us laugh, and bantered with his endearing stories and whatever else may have popped into his head. As said before, you know a good song when you hear it, and in this acoustic forum, the songs took center stage.

Griffin’s songs are simple but complex in their thought and design. Lyrically, they harbor messages and perspectives about societal ills, but mostly they make you smile and ponder a little about yourself. Armed with acoustic guitar and his incredible percussionist, Michael Jerome, in a nearly 90-minute set, Griffin played, sang, joked, and wiggled his way into our hearts. Some of the most well-received songs of the night included: “Juicy”, “One More Murder”, “Stuck Like Glue”, and “Good.”

Kevin Griffin continues his solo show-so check out the dates. Better Than Ezra will tour this summer 2015. We suggest you catch both.
