The Hollywood Fringe festival is known for a hands-off approach regarding the production of submissions that are able to find a stage within festival. The purpose of this approach is to encourage bold choices and creativity. Sometimes this seems to work. Sometimes it doesn't. Success of this approach seems evident with The Ray Burley production "Up Down Stick Stuck".
This story of three strangers trapped in an immobile elevator explores the lives of contrasting characters stalled both physically and in life. Utilizing a text brimming with comedy and catastrophe, the talented thespians skillfully drive its audience into worlds of pain, passion, and fantasy.
"Up Down Stick Stuck", showing from June 11 thru June 26th fearlessly tackles theatrical confinement, placing characters in a space in which there is no immediate escape. Though this device could easily prove tedious in less skilled hands, "Up Down Stick Stuck" effortlessly hugs the curves of its running time with emotion, heart and action.
The ensemble generated piece includes members Dawn Alden, Brendan Weinhold, and Kerry Nash. All three are proficient in their skill, but each performance beads with individuality. A refreshing fact since there are no entrances or exits within this unique piece.
Brendan Weinhold as the only male character in the play maintains an impressive balance in of masculinity and vulnerability, skillfully showing that one does not have to be in direct contrast with the other. His performance is paced and crescendos with natural creativity.
Kerry Nash takes a break from her comedic roots to join this production. Her small size is undetectable from the power of her performance. Nash's ability to invoke characters determinedly outside of the comfort zone of many of her peers is intriguing to watch and her delivery is enchanting.
Although new to this author, Dawn Alden is obviously not new to the stage. Her choices are bold and captivating and her performance will leave one searching desperately for more of her following the show.
"Up Down Stick Stuck" is a development of Ray Burley Productions. RBP takes the rare mission of creating theater that is accessible to everyone. Shows are "pay what you can" and often the benevolent company will make donations to charities chosen by the production team and cast.
"Up Down Stick Stuck" is directed by Patrick Albanesius. His directing uses simplicity to tell a powerful. Simplicity in this formula, makes for a successful show.
