Spanish giants Real Madrid lost to Italian club team Internazionale in penalty kicks on Saturday afternoon at the California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, CA. Both teams ended in a 1-1 tie after 90 minutes of play and had to go into the penalty phase to determine a winner from the Group A game of the Guinness International Champions Cup.
It was reported that Welsh striker Gareth Bale of Spaniard team Madrid opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a stupendous goal. Bale received the ball from about the half field and dribbled down about 15 to 20 yards and blasted away. The shot that was blasted from roughly 65 yards out zipped by Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic who was left standing without reacting.
Internazionale responded in the second half with a penalty made by Argentine forward Mauro Icardi. The game stayed tied at 1-1, despite the fact that Real Madrid slightly dominated the game with shots taken and ball control.
The game went into penalties and to determine a winner between Spaniard club team Real and Italian club Inter. For the International Champions Cup, teams that tie in the group stage must go into the penalty phase to determine the winner, skipping the overtime of two 15-minute halves.
During the penalties, Inter goalkeeper from Argentina Juan Pablo Carrizo, who was subbed into the game during the break, blocked two penalties including one with his legs. Real goalkeeper Jesus Fernandez, who was also subbed into the game during the break, blocked one and got lucky with another, as Inter’s French midfielder Yann M’Vila hit the left post.
Also, Madrid defender Omar Mascarell missed the goal completely by shooting over the left side of the crossbar. The victory in penalties gave the Italian club Inter two points in Group A of the International Champions Cup, as Real only gained one point for tying 1-1 during the 90 minutes of regular play.
The Italian club Internazionale will now face English club Manchester United on Tuesday at the FedEx Field in Washington DC. English giant Manchester United won their first game of Group A against Italian club and sub-champion of Serie A Roma 3-2.
Spaniard club team Real Madrid will face AS Roma on Tuesday as well at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, TX. Despite losing to Inter, Real has a point over Roma, as Roma lost during regular time and not in penalties like Spaniard giant Real did.
