‘Royals’ singer Lorde is the latest performer added to the roster for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. At the May 18 ceremony in Las Vegas, the New Zealand teen will treat viewers to her first televised performance of ‘Tennis Court,’ a song from her impressive debut album, ‘Pure Heroine.’
‘Tennis Court’ is one of several standout tracks on the record. Like prior hits ‘Royals’ and ‘Team,’ ‘Tennis Court’ is a sparse track built around Lorde’s vocals, with percussive clicks and programmed drum beats rounding out the music.
“Baby, be the class clown / I’ll be the beauty queen in tears / It’s a new art form showing people how little we care,” Lorde sings during the song’s catchy chorus.
No less an authority than Sir Elton John called the track “one of the most touching, beautiful things on earth,” and while his assessment might be slightly exaggerated, the song is definitely one of the best on the album.
Lorde is a finalist in 12 Billboard Award categories, a total that ties her for the lead with Imagine Dragons. Her nominations included Top Hot 100 Song for ‘Royals,’ Top New Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, and Top Radio Songs Artist.
The 17-year-old has been busy winning awards all year. She nabbed two Grammys in January, including Song of the Year, and earlier this month she captured the iHeartRadio Award for Best New Artist, after which she tweeted, “THANKS SO MUCH DUDES for the best new artist award at this year's iheartradio awards!”
Lorde had to cancel several Australian concerts last month when doctors ordered her to return to New Zealand to rest and overcome exhaustion and illness. Hopefully flying halfway around the globe this weekend to pick up a few more trophies and share her latest song with an American audience won’t prove to be too tiring.
The addition of Lorde bolsters an already strong performance lineup for this year’s Billboard telecast. Previously announced performers include Miley Cyrus, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Florida Georgia Line, Jason Derulo, Imagine Dragons, John Legend, OneRepublic, Carrie Underwood, and Miranda Lambert. Other top nominees include Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Beyonce, Robin Thicke, Luke Bryan, One Direction, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
The 2014 Billboard Music Awards air live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 18 on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.
