Lera Lynn’s new album, The Avenues, is as powerful as a conjurer’s most potent spell. She has an enviable ability to weave a dark musical seduction that entices listeners to follow her deep into her haunting tonal landscapes. The breathy warble of Lynn’s nostalgic timbre is fiercely captivating and more alluring than a siren’s irresistible call.
The Avenues (available Sept. 9, 2014) was produced by Joshua Grange and it is Lera’s magnum opus. She has written the entire album with a bold conviction, unafraid to descend into the deeply personal regions of her soul. Notable musicians on the work include guitarist Ben Lewis, bassist Sebastian Steinberg (Fiona Apple, Soul Coughing), keyboardist Jebin Bruni (Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, Meshell Ndegeocello), and drummer Quinn (Tracy Chapman, eastmountainsouth). Grange also provided his distinctive touch on guitar, pedal steel, and other instruments.
Lynn’s music is often hard to label. In response, she has stated in her bio, “Ray Charles went from jazz to R&B to country. Paul McCartney will do a ballad next to ‘Helter Skelter,’ and not think twice. The most successful and lasting artists let inspiration steer them, not genre or marketing pitch. I’m just doing what moves me as it comes.”
Truly, The Avenues is an album that defies conventional genrefication. There is a swampy mysticism that permeates most of the tracks, largely due to Lera’s beautiful yet forlorn vocals, but it’s galvanized by a soulful, dusty twang. This is the unforgettable, atmospheric sound that turns artists into legends, and Lynn is poised to become the next great American classic.
