We don’t know about you, but when we think of boy bands, especially of the late-’90s early-’00s ilk, we think of frosted tips. So we embarked on a journey to figure out who did frosted tips the best and listed all of them right below.

Not everyone could be on this list because that list would be very long. So, honorable mention to the older brother from “Malcolm In The Middle,” Mark McGrath, Guy Fieri, David Beckham, Halle Berry, Justin Bieber, Ryan Cabrera, Andrei Kirilenko, Brad Pitt in “Burn After Reading,” late-’90s David Bowie, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and everyone on the #frostedtips hashtag page on Instagram.

    Frosted Aggression: Medium to High

After all of these years, A.J. McLean remains a boy band oddity. We’re not sure if he was supposed to be the bad boy of the group or just a strange Jon B. knockoff. And, actually, looking back,  A.J. McLean was the only person in the world who could’ve challenged Jon B. for the sharpest pencil beard in the game. Why hasn’t a Jon B. and A.J. McLean collaboration happened yet? But we digress. While A.J.’s facial hair was on-point, things went belly-up when you ventured north to his perpetually confused hair, if you saw it. He was always seen wearing a variety of goofy hats that covered up a creeping hairline that often resembled a sunroof stuck at half open. When he did let the locks loose, his peak frost moment came with his wild, bloomin’ onion, deep fried look. Long story short: A.J.'s frosts were great, but his pencil beard was better.

We’re down to the top three, and, honestly, ALL of *NSYNC could occupy spots in this list. At one point or another, they were all sporting some type of permanent hair dew, yet none of them adhered to the frost like Justin and Lance. Like, Lance’s frosted tip game was so strong that they actually made collectible marionettes modeled after the ones in the “It’s Gonna Be Me Video,” and “Bye Bye Bye” videos and, while Lance’s looks nothing like him, the single feature the toy designers actually bothered to get right were, yep, the tips. Lance ranks high because his frosted tips had some personality to them. It wasn’t just thoughtless frosting for the hell of it. It was meticulous, stark, bold, only bested by the other *NSYNC froster.

You remember BBMak, right? They were that England boy band trio that cast off boy band norms by trying to play actual instruments, and whose biggest publicity event came when they hosted a radio ticket giveaway on the Disney Channel kid sitcom “Even Stevens.” BBMak was also one of those boy bands where you couldn't really tell any of them apart. They said that their names were Mark, Christian, and Stephen but we couldn’t say. The one thing that distinguished them, though, were Christian’s tips (we think it’s Christian.) Where the other Maks opted to play it straight, Burns ran his hair through several frosty permutations. There was the swipe, the spiked frosts, the elder statesmen, not-letting-it-go spiked frosts, and The Works. However, his best effort came when he struck that tasteful balance between a full-frost and just being one of the other Maks. And being a Mak probably makes Burns' frosties the least worthy of adulation. They are indeed impressive, but with their lack of visibility and notoriety, he might as well have not frosted at all.

One man who isn’t afraid or ashamed of a little past frosting is Nick Lachey from 98 Degrees. Nick Lachey has looked the same for about two decades now, and his hair has looked the same for about two decades now which is even more impressive. He still rocks the peak, and he’s tried it all. He’s gone conventional, slightly tousled, the don’t-know-any-better. What really makes Nick Lachey standout is the photo of him where he only frosted the front peak of his hair. The ingenuity nudges him just ahead of Timberlake. And because Nick Lachey has kept the same front spike to this day, you just know he’s ready for frosted tips to come back. That’s the only explanation for keeping the same hair for this many years. So he waits. Ready to frost again.

There’s never been a “cool” boy band. Even The Beatles--who were by all measures a boy band--had a lame straight-edge quality to them, with their little boots, cherubic faces, and narrow suits. LFO, though, tried really, really hard to be cool which is why Rich Cronin makes this list. Because out of the dozens of boy bands in the pop universe, LFO is one of those exceptions that had at least had a little swag to them. It was a suburban, rhythm-less, mega-mall swag, to be fair, but it was a swag at least. You only need to investigate their video for their hit “Summer Girls” where Cronin and the boys are breakdancing on the pier surrounded by throngs of people sourced from their hood, and dancing, crouching, and stunting on top of a hot dog stand. In fact, tangentially, the “Summer Girls” video bears a striking resemblance to Nas’ “Hate Me Now” video where Nas and Puffy dance on top of a bodega and strut down the street while a bunch of guys aggressively gesture around and hold them back. “Summer Girls” is exactly like that. Sort of. This also made us wonder what Nas would look like with frosted tips.

They are the frosted tips of lore, what you show when your kid asks you what frosted tips are. Unlike other frosted tips, JT’s included an added element of wondrous texture that made them slightly mysterious, frosty curios. Were they crunchy? Soft? Sort of like soggy bread? Alas, we’ll never know. JT changed his look with the quickness, making it seem like he was ashamed of his ultra-blonde past. And because of that disavowal, they also live in infamy.

    Boy Band: Formerly of O-Town

    Frosted Aggression: Critical

You know how a person's name sometimes locks them into a career path that is damn near impossible to abandon? Like, with the name Mike Tyson, you have no choice but to pursue a career in pummeling human faces into mush. With a name like Ashley Angel Parker (APA), you have no choice but to frost your tips aggressively and enter the boy band game. What’s more is that Ashley Parker Angel isn’t even his real name. He added the Angel, meaning that he was and is really about this boy band life, the prototype boy band member (which makes it all the more puzzling that he quit.) When they first came on the scene via MTV’s “Making The Band,” O-Town, while not radically changing the boy band template, did push boundaries slightly, hair-wise at least. For starters, they had Jacob, who adequately appealed to the dreadlocked, beach-bro, let-me-play-an-acoustic-song-for-you-alone psycho-demographic that was on the cusp of exploding into the national consciousness in the early aughts. They also had Erik-Michael Estrada who employed a shaved head. And then, Trevor, who was like a proto-Drake if we’re just going by looks. In a bid to cover all the bases and to secure the widest appeal, there was also the lovable Dan and Ashley Parker Angel. APA always felt almost too perfect, and in the pursuit of becoming the perfect boy bander, he overestimated the frosting. It’s literally too much of a good thing, the whole cake as opposed to a cupcake. That admitted perfection still gets it on this list, though.
