As families say farewell to summer and welcome back to school, August celebrates a family staple, the sandwich. August is National Sandwich Month. From simple ham and cheese to spicy salami, the classic sandwich can appeal to everyone’s taste profiles. Chicago restaurants have numerous sandwich offers that are a perfect way to celebrate National Sandwich Month.
The classic sandwich dates back centuries. According to food lore, Earl of Sandwich, John Montague, wanted a food option that would not interrupt his 24 hour gambling session. During his play, a London club provided beef and cheese slices between two pieces of bread. The convenience food of a sandwich was born.
Today, the concept of the sandwich is prevalent. From simple, at home varieties to restaurant, sophisticated creations, the sandwich is more than a convenience food. For the home, a sandwich can be a perfect vehicle to eat more vegetables or try new flavors. Summer fresh tomatoes, sliced avocado or a peppery arugula can add some depth of flavor to the sandwich.
During National Sandwich Month, some Chicago favorite restaurants have amazing sandwich offerings that can satisfy the sandwich cravings. From classic
