Long, lanky, and so, so sexy. With his wildly gorgeous hair and sexy moves, Billy Squier was perhaps the most provocative rock performer of the '80s. His music caught our attention with its unique sound and sassy lyrics.
“Lonely is the night when you find yourself alone. Your demons come to light and your mind is not your own.” Billy Squier/”Lonely is the Night”
Born William Haislip Squier, on May 12, 1950, Billy will be a golden 65 this year. He picked up his first guitar at the young age of 12, and is still rock and rolling. That’s 53 years!
Before he hit the mainstream, which was in the '80s, Billy actually founded the band Piper in the mid-'70s. Out of the two albums that Piper had released, Circus Magazine voted their debut album, Piper, as the best debut album that had ever been released by an American rock and roll band at that time. Billy did leave the band shortly after the release of their second album, I Can’t Wait.
The slinky rocker with the gorgeous locks went solo. Enter the '80s, and Billy signed with the Capitol Records label. In 1980 he released his debut album. We would like to mention an interesting little tid bit here. The song “Big Beat”, from that album, has become one of the most sampled songs in the history of hip-hop music. Master Jay knows that!
His next album, Don’t Say No, was released in 1981 and was an instant hit. “The Stroke”, “My Kinda Lover”, “In the Dark”, were topping the charts on a worldwide scale. The album was such a hit, and the tunes so catchy, that it actually stayed on Billboard’s Top 100 Albums for over two years.
In 1982 Billy released his third album, Emotions in Motion. There again was another instant success for the charismatic rocker. Freddie Mercury actually chimed in with Billy on the title track, and Roger Taylor of Queen was on drums. “Everybody Wants You” was the biggest hit off of the album, and was at number one on the charts for weeks.
Billy Squier released his fourth album, Signs of Life. This would be his third to go Platinum. “Rock Me Tonight”, was a huge hit on the airwaves, and the video was making waves of its own on MTV. A very provocative video in its day.
A very interesting bit of nostalgia, Billy was responsible for bringing British rockers, Def Leppard, to America in the mid-'80s. We owe him a big “thank you” for kick starting the music career of another sexy band, with timeless music of their own.
The sexy Squier performed for sold out audiences well into the nineties. His last and final album, Tell the Truth, was released in 1993. He is still considered one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time. Billy is still performing and does keep his Facebook page updated, so we have included the link. We believe that his music is timeless!
So, we would like to share some timeless music with you. Here are five awesome tunes from Billy Squier.
